In 1869 Dr. B.F. Goodrich purchased the Hudson River Rubber Company. In 1870, armed with a licensing agreement from Charles Goodyear, Dr. Goodrich moved his company to Akron, Ohio, officially founding the BFGoodrich Company. Throughout the 20th century BFGoodrich Tires grew to be the world’s largest tire company, part of which was fueled by the 1986 merger with Uniroyal Tires. With growing interests in US Defense Contracts and its chemical and aerospace businesses, the Goodrich Corporation decided to exit the tire business in 1988. BFGoodrich Tires is now a subsidiary of Michelin Tires.
With rubber supplies difficult to come by during World War II there was not enough rubber to create the inner tube that was typical of tires at the time.
