Dunlop Tires Quick Bio and Tires for Sale
Ideas and the companies that result are often born from solutions that are missed or unrealized. Dunlop Tire’s beginnings are no exception. In 1888, with a need to make his son’s tricycle riding experience more enjoyable, John Dunlop created his first set of tires crafted from canvas and held together by liquid rubber. The following year Mr. Dunlop convinced renowned Irish cyclist William “Willie” Hume it would be to his benefit to race using his tires. The success that would follow established Dunlop’s tires as the standard for championship racing.
More than 20 years later Dunlop Tires would begin to reap the rewards in automobile racing with their first Grand Prix victory in 1923. This would prove to be the catalyst of a racing dynasty that would have unparalleled success. Over the next 14 years Dunlop Tires won ten 24 Hours of Le Mans races. The Dunlop Tires dynasty would continue to exert its dominance throughout the 50’s and 60’s as they would win five more 24 Hours of Le Mans races and seven consecutive Formula One championships.
As much as Dunlop’s tires have dominated the world of racing they have also been a leader in the creation of new tire technologies. In 1922 Dunlop added steel rods to his canvas casings, which tripled the life of the tire. In 1962 Dunlop set out to find and later created a solution for aquaplaning, also known as hydroplaning. In 1998 they introduced the Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology (DSST), allowing tires to perform safely when flat. As a division of Sumitomo Tires, Dunlop Tires formed an alliance in 1999 with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company to expand its global reach and racing heritage. Today, Dunlop Tires continues to prove their devotion to creating innovative technologies and winning, in the lab, on the track, and on the road.
If you love driving your high performance vehicle as the original designer imagined, Dunlop’s ultra-high performance Sport tires were designed for you.
