When brother-in-laws John Schaefer and Claude Hart purchased M & H Manufacturing of Akron, Ohio in 1914, they set out to develop a unique tire business. The company produced tire repair products as the automobile and tire industries grew rapidly. The following year the brother-in-laws added to their growing tire repair business by purchasing the tire rebuilding company Giant Tire & Rubber of Akron, Ohio. In 1946 they changed the company’s name to Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, the result of an earlier merger with I.J. Cooper’s auto parts companies.

As the second largest US tire manufacturer (Goodyear US #1), they have fueled their growth by acquiring several highly regarded companies, including England’s Avon Tyres, and specialty tire producers Mickey Thompson Tires and Dick Cepek Tires.
